Karolina
I work with video, light and sound installations where the outside confronts our inside. The works become like a bubble where I and the viewer can reflect on why things are the way they are. The bubble can sometimes be a flood of bombastic movie kisses and pasted-on smiles. The bubble can also be a party with song and dance. Sometimes the bubble is something that grows, just like what grew in me. Since 2022, the bubble has mostly consisted of plastic. The microplastics found in our water, our blood, our tears.
Bio
I grew up in the Swedish countryside south of Örebro. Between 2011-2013 I studied at Örebro Art School and in 2018 I received a master's degree from the Royal Institute of Art in Stockholm. Since then I have exhibited my works at Västerås Konstmuseum, Uppsala Art Museum, Sörmlands museum, Magasin 9 (Stockholm) OpenArt and The Contemporary Garage (Örebro). Oxelväg works with plastic, video, sound and light that she presents in spacious and site specific installations. She has a soft spot for collaborations and is a member of The Board for Grand Art, Konstbunkern, Extra Opus and Konstfest.

Karolina Oxelväg
When the appearance crumbles,
it eats itself in.
it eats itself in.
Karolina Oxelväg works with video installations focusing on power relations and social pressures placed on us as individuals in a collective society. By sampling and assembling clips from the TV industry, YouTube and Hollywood movies she highlights contemporary popular cultural phenomena and trends, analyzes and comments on them. Aiming to look beyond various treacherously glittery and happy facades, Oxelväg wants to question in what different ways today’s massive flow of rapid entertainment affects its spectators.
Oxelväg is also creator och and active member of THE BOARD, a feminist artist group working against elitism and inequality in the art world through performance, video installation and social media.
